Wiregrass Area Elementary Science Olympiad Tournament Elementary Science Olympiad tournaments are academic interscholastic competitions that consist of a series of individual and team events that students prepare for during the year. Most Science Olympiad events require teamwork, group planning and cooperation. The emphasis is on learning, participation, interaction, and having fun. Teams of up to 24 students in grades 3-6 prepare to compete against other schools in a wide range of events. Events at all levels of Science Olympiad competition involve knowledge among a broad array of fields including life, earth, and physical sciences, problem solving, and technology. However, memorizing facts and figures is not the basis for the majority of Science Olympiad events. Rather, students are challenged with events balanced among science concepts, processes, and applications. Some of the Dothan City Schools elementary schools have participated in Science Olympiad for many years. There has not been a local tournament, however, and teams have had to travel long distances in order to compete. This year, The Carver School of Mathematics, Science, and Technology will host a competition here in Dothan in conjunction with and at Dothan High School. This means that our teams will not have to travel as far to participate. It also means that we can offer participation to teams in communities surrounding Dothan that have never participated or are not able to take a team long distances. Wiregrass Area Elementary Science Olympiad Tournament Dothan High School March 7th, 2020 The Science Olympiad competition day is an exciting one for students and their teachers and families, with large numbers attending awards ceremonies. For every team that registers, there are an estimated 75 people that might possibly attend the competition, so if 10 teams registered, an estimated 240 students and 750 total students, teachers, and family members would be in attendance. With such a large event and potentially large crowd, volunteer assistance is of the utmost importance. Donated money would be used to purchase volunteer t shirts so that they stand out at the competition. It would also be used to purchase food vouchers for or have lunch catered for volunteers. In addition to volunteers, funds are needed to purchase the necessary materials for each event, including consumable science supplies and equipment.
